So we are finally making our big announcement. The name of our church! For the past few months we’ve been operating as the “Columbia Heights Project” but as we start forming our launch team and get closer to our launch, we wanted to officially announce what the name of our church will be.
Our name is:
Names matter. For the ancient Hebrew people, all names had a meaning behind them, they said something about who they were. So when it came to choose a name for our church, we wanted a name that would encapsulate our identity. And we feel that the name Encounter accomplishes that.
There is this story in the book of Acts about a man named Saul. Saul was this religious zealot that really hated Christians, to the point that he was trying to get them arrested. And as he is on his way to a town called Damascus in order to arrest Christians, something happens. He sees this light from Heaven that blinds him and makes him fall off his horse. Out of light comes the voice of Jesus, asking Saul why he is persecuting him.
And that’s pretty much it. Next thing you know Saul is out and about in the city… preaching about Jesus! Later on Saul changes his name to Paul and becomes the greatest champion of Christianity of his generation.
Isn’t that crazy? There wasn’t a lengthy intellectual debate between Saul and somebody else…
He didn’t read a book or listen to a sermon…
He just had an Encounter with Jesus…
And it completely transformed his life.
And you actually see this happen all over the Scriptures. People that had an Encounter with God were never the same. Regardless of background, from the poor, sick and disenfranchised, to the powerful and influential. From Moses, to the disciples, to countless people that met Jesus throughout his ministry. That is how powerful God’s love and presence is.
And we believe, that Jesus is now distinctly present in the world through the Church. The book of Ephesians calls the Church the “fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”
For us, this means that, as we are present in our neighborhood, as we engage the people around us and serve our community. As we gather together to sing songs, and study the Scriptures, and remember Jesus’ death, as we do all these things, God is present. And if God is present when we are with our neighbors and friends, then there is a possibility for our friends and neighbors to encounter God. And an encounter with God, well, that can change everything.
This is our mission.
To create environments where people can have transforming encounters with God.
So there you go, that’s our name and the meaning behind it.
We are just getting started, we have a ton more news to share as we get closer to our launch.
For now, save the date 09.10.17 on your calendar

We are exactly 10 months away and we can’t wait!
